How To Clean The Throttle Body On A 1997 Grand Prix

This is an easy cleaning DIY that will probable improve the experience of your S65'due south throttle response and may reduce stress on your car'south throttle actuators which may extend their operating lifespan. If you tin can change your machine's oil, you can complete this DIY.

Examples of the problem. Bank check out the carbon build up on these S65 throttle bodies (engine was throwing codes):

This 1 was not equally dirty, but was besides throwing codes at the time of filming:

This one had decent buildup and maybe some sort of TA related upshot every bit well:

Hand Tools Needed:
T25 Torx bit (for air box removal)
10mm socket (for two coolant reservoir bolts, two for the air box removal)
6mm socket (for eight throttle body clamps)
socket wrench
extensions (I used six" and nine", other sizes can piece of work likewise)
a modest brush (erstwhile molar castor or I used this phosphor bronze brush for gun cleaning and found it to be very effective, paradigm borrowed from here)

Materials Needed:
shop rags or paper towels
throttle body cleaner (image link borrowed from hither)

Step 1: Remove the plenum (for novices, its the large plastic thing on peak of your engine with the MV8 logo). Follow the instructions in these great DIYs to learn how to practise this:

a. W///'s DIY with lots of pictures.
b. elp_jc's DIY instructions (no pictures anymore, but well written and curtailed instructions).
c. Rat3d///G's DIY with plenty of pictures.
d. Atruelunatic's DIY with lots of pictures.
east. Ovalbore'south YouTube video.

In one case you have the plenum off you lot may see something similar to this and say to yourself, looks good, what's the problem?

Yet upon closer inspection you may meet this or worse:

Perhaps for an engine that doesn't take a history of throttle actuator issues this wouldn't exist a large deal, just this is an S65. The buildup around the hinges is of particular involvement. This buildup at the hinges creates some resistance that that over time will crave more force from the actuators to plow, particularly at the least used condition, full throttle.

Pace 2: One at a time make clean the throttle bodies by spraying the throttle body cleaner on them, using your castor to agitate the buildup then use a store rag or paper towels to clean up the gunk. When yous open the valves to make clean the hinges and the area but below the valves to endeavour place a store rag or paper towel beneath the expanse you are cleaning to grab the oil, cleaner and gunk.

Hither is ane throttle body cleaned (lower one) and one withal muddied (upper 1).

Step iii:

Re-install the plenum.

The offset time I did this I was non careful and allowed also much cleaner (and carbon gunk) to into the intake. The car ran terrible for several minutes equally the gunk and throttle trunk cleaner I didn't catch was burned off by the engine. This of course fouled up the pre-true cat O2 sensor a left me with a check engine light, error code 0027C5. I replaced the pre-cat O2 sensors and the cheque engine light is at present gone. I was much more conscientious for subsequent cleanings and did not foul upward whatsoever O2 sensors. If your machine is catless this business concern may be mute.

Like to previous cars I've completed this service for, the M3 feels similar information technology has a mild increment in throttle response speed afterwards.

If y'all want to change out your pre-true cat O2 sensors or spark plugs to possibly further improve responsiveness, check out these guides:

a. DIY here from DAT240.
b. DIY tips here from Brian_Fantana.

Edit: If y'all would like to take the extra fourth dimension to fully remove the throttle bodies before cleaning them, check out this link hither where a guy did just that on his S85, which should exist very similar to the process on the S65 motor.
