When you have a special occasion to cook for, and friends and family to feed you'll want an easy recipe with maximum flavour and a bit of wow factor. This slow cooker gammon recipe is perfect, requiring just a few minutes preparation at the start before letting the slow cooker do all the hard work. In fact, this gammon recipe only requires five main ingredients, so there isn't even a long list of items to purchase beforehand.
All that's required of this slow cooker gammon is to add half the sugar and the unsmoked gammon joint to the slow cooker, rubbing the rest of the sugar into the gammon. Then simply pour in the cider, add bay leaves and peppercorns before setting on high and cooking for four hours. It really is that simple and you'll be rewarded with a slow cooker gammon joint that's meltingly tender.
This recipe would also be wonderful with a glaze and if you have time you will have a festive gammon requiring very little effort for Christmas. For the glaze, you just take the top layer of fat from the gammon and brush the gammon with a mixture of honey and mustard before cooking in a preheated oven for around 20mins, until golden. Serve hot or cold with mash and greens, homemade chips, crusty bread or potato salad and mustard. There will hopefully be plenty of leftovers afterwards.

Unsmoked gammon joint, about 1.6kg
150 g (5oz) light brown soft sugar
500 ml (17 fl 0z) cider
2 bay leaves
10 black peppercorns

Tip half the sugar into the slow cooker and place the gammon on top. Rub over the remaining sugar.

Pour in the cider around the gammon. Add the bay leaves and peppercorns. Cover with the lid and cook on high for 4hr.

Lift out of slow cooker and discard liquid. If you want to glaze the ham, follow GH Tip below. Serve hot or cold with mash and greens, crusty bread or potato salad and mustard.

The slow cooker gammon would also be delicious with a sticky glaze. Remove the top layer of fat from the gammon, brush the gammon with 1tbsp each of runny honey and wholegrain mustard and cook in a preheated oven at 200°C (180°C) mark 6 for about 15-20min until golden.
